Bayard Rustin Activist Rustin worked for civil rights, social justice, and world peace for more than fifty years. His major achievement was organizing the 1963 March on Washington, the pinnacle of the African American Civil Rights movement. Rustin also was a prominent figure in the early stages of the gay and lesbian rights struggle.
