Number Talks, of course, help students to learn the actual math at hand. Math discourse is a great way to support the use of precise mathematical language , such as “tens place” or “addend.” They also build connections between conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and mental math strategies.

These number talks don’t need to be fancy or complex! Basic, fast, and meaningful, that’s all you want.
